Vietnamese nail techs and owners attend chemical safety class, Rainier Valley, Seattle.

The safety and sanitation training class for nail techs and nail salons’ owners
On Sunday Nov 1st, 2009 Vietnamese nail techs and owners attend chemical safety class, Rainier Valley, Seattle. Nearly 30 Vietnamese nail techs and nail salon owners attended the training class at Building 2100 (Rainier Valley, Seattle).

The class was hosted by the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program (LHWMP) and Environmental Coalition of South Seattle (ECOSS), The class lasted about 2 hours, all attendees discussed and were guided in how to handle chemicals, as well as safety and sanitation in nail salon. This workshop was focused on protecting and improving the environmental workplace in nail salons where all nail techs and nail salon owners usually work with and breathe in chemicals all day long. Through this workshop, all attendees received information on financial assistance from LHWMP and helpful information like updated regulations from Dept of Licensing and safety work practices for nail salons.

LHWMP of King County and ECOSS are concerned about safety and chemical exposure issues at nail salons in King County that have high percentage of Vietnamese owners. Because of short comings in knowledge of safety and chemical handling in salons there are several cases of sanitation & safety violations that happened at nail salons. We don’t have exact numbers of nail salons in WA but following the estimate there are several thousand nail salons in WA.

To help nail techs to understand more about safety and sanitation when working at nail salon, LHWMP and ECOSS are offering the program to help nail salons, and you can contact Tram Duong – ECOSS at 206-778-4616 to ask for more information.
